Certainly not enough.  What you eat really matters.  If breast milk is the whole source of nutrition for your baby, you need to specially take care of your diet to ensure a balance diet for your baby’s health and development.

 

Healthy diet will ensure a good source of food (milk) to your babies. Be sure that your daily diet is safe and healthy and should be consistent throughout the day. If you are trying a new product, it will be good if you can keep track by recording down what you eat and your baby react to it each time.

Breastfeeding mother will require more energy when nursing a baby if compared to pregnancy period. To give you more energy and nutrition to build healthy milk for your baby, you must add 500 more calories every day (in pregnancy, it was 300 calories) into your regular diet.

 

Breastfeeding mothers need at least 1,800 calories a day to continue breastfeeding.  To have enough amount of milk, breastfeeding mother shall need about 2,700 calories daily. If you afraid that your may put on lots of weight, you may increase your calories intake gradually. Some research shows that fewer calories can decrease milk production. So, do plan and adjust to increase your calories to adequately supplement yourself and your baby concurrently.

 

Here is a tip, do consider adding nutritious snacks in your regular diet to add more calories.

 

 

All babies require Docosahexanoic Acid (DHA) and Arachidonic Acid (AA), two fats that enhance brain and eye development.

 

To have enough of these vital fats, consider taking fish.  Fish is a great source of Omega 3 fatty acids and is the most concentrated sources of DHA. Varieties of fish are safe and healthy to take for instance Salmon and markerel that live in oceans, take at least two to three meals weekly.

 

It’s advisable to not take more than 12 ounces a week (about two servings) of canned tuna and other cooked fish, according to the FDA/EPA guidelines.  Some experts also recommended avoid tile fish, shark, and swordfish, because of potentially dangerous mercury levels.

It’s recommended to add 10 grams of protein each day through your regular diet, the same as pregnancy. Some good examples of protein-rich food are soy milk, tofu and nuts.  

 

Some breastfeeding mothers just simply get extra protein by eating more of the food they usually eat.  For instance, you can drink 3 cups of soy milk or low-fat milk with 6 ounces of lean meat and some dairy products such as nuts to have the adequate amount of protein into your regular diet.

 

 

Good source of calcium are milk and dairy products.  Breastfeeding mothers need about 1,000 mg a day, same as pregnancy period.  Calcium is an important source for you and baby.  It helps build baby’s bones and teeth and a healthy heart, muscle and nerves.  If breastfeeding mothers do not get enough calcium, your baby will take away the necessary calcium required from you which may lead you encounter osteoporosis when you get old.

 

My mother is a good example for not taking enough calcium during pregnancy.  She delivered me when she was 24 and left one and only one teeth by then, and diagnosed with osteoporosis when she was just mid 40.  

 

Do plan your daily calcium intake.  If you are afraid you may not get enough calcium through your regular diet.  Do consider taking calcium supplement.  Keep in mind that calcium supplement should be taken in moderation and do not overdose it.  Too much calcium will cause frequent urination, constipation and increase possibility of getting kidney stone.

 

Calcium is very important source for our bone, even though after your breastfeeding period, you need to ensure to prevent for bone lose.

 

 

Choline and Iron are essential nutrients for infant’s brain development and entire body, so make sure to include choline-rich food such as eggs and beef in your diet on a regular basis.

 

Spinach, along with other leafy vegetables, is an excellent source of iron.   The United States Department of Agriculture reported that a 180g serving of boiled spinach contains 6.43 mg of iron, whereas one 170g of hamburger patty contains at most 4.42mg.

 

 

Water is the best source of your liquid intake.  It’s recommended for breastfeeding mother to take at least 10 cups (10 ounces) of drinks per day, or 100 ounces a day.  If you find water is too boring, here is a tip, do consider substitute it with juice, milk, milk tea or caffeine free lemon tea or any kind of healthy and caffeine-free drink.

Rule of thumb for breastfeeding mother is to avoid taking extensively food and drink that are caffeinated, alcohol, large amount of sodium and large amount of soda.  

 

Breastfeeding mothers can still eat or drink whatever they like. It doesn’t mean to stop eating or drinking the food or drink you like completely.  You can still enjoy a cup of red wine with your dinner or drink your favorite coffee or tea to refresh yourself.  Taking it in moderation is the key. So, consider and decide your intake accordingly.

Tip #4. Look for Certified and/or Approved Products

 

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) had passed a national standard for organic labelling that takes care of the National Organic Program and Organic Production Act that intended to assure consumers that the organic foods they purchase are produced, processed, and certified with national organic standards.

There are three classifications of organic labelling.

1) 100% Organic – when it says “100% organic”, it means the product contains only organically produced ingredients.  The product will label USDA 100% Organic Seal.
